Decluttering My Makeup Collection
I have soooo much makeup.
Way too much in fact. So much so that I realized I don’t use at least 40% of it. Especially the lipsticks. I probably had over 70 lip products. But no more. I’ve decided to declutter my makeup collection, and only keep the items I use.
Now I know this sounds scary, but it’s really not once you start going through your collection. As I went through each drawer, I rediscovered some old favorites and tossed the ones I knew I didn’t like, but had kept for no reason. I first went through my lipsticks. The top drawer in my makeup organizer (they’re Muji drawers by the way), was full of lipsticks I didn’t use. I actually remember organizing that drawer specifically because I knew I didn’t use them, but I didn’t want to throw them away in case I ever did. Did I ever use any of them? A few times. But they were all the wrong shade or had thoroughly been used so I ended up putting them right back.
I didn’t want to be wasteful though, so I shared my crazy wealth of makeup with my mom and grandma. They took a few items, some lipsticks, glosses, blushes, and eye shadows. The rest? Straight in the garbage.
Now, I can actually see what I have in my collection and I realize just how much I had. And how I definitely don’t need to buy an ounce of makeup for at least 6 months. I have one backup foundation (MAC studio fix), 4-5 mascaras, and two backup eyebrow pencils (Lancome); all of which are items I usually need to replenish on a semi regular basis but now that I’ve found all of my backups (which I totally forgot I had), no need to spend more!
I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. No matter how many times I organized my makeup, it never seemed clean because I had way too much excess. Now I only have items I use often, which isn’t too bad and actually makes it easier to look for the things I actually want to use. I don’t miss the old makeup because I never used it in the first place.
